Grain bin entrapments rise during harvest — what every farm should know
Flowing grain can bury a person in seconds. Safety experts urge lockout procedures and never entering alone.

Harvest season brings a predictable spike in grain bin entrapments, and safety experts say nearly all of them are preventable. Flowing grain behaves like quicksand: a person standing on moving grain can be pulled under in seconds and is often unable to escape on their own.
The most important rule is simple. Never enter a bin while unloading equipment is running, and lock out the auger so no one can start it while someone is inside. Many entrapments happen when a person climbs in to break up a crusted or bridged surface.
Experts recommend never entering a bin alone, wearing a harness tied to a lifeline, and having a trained observer outside who can call for help. Bridged grain can collapse without warning and bury anyone standing beneath it.
Local fire departments increasingly train for bin rescues, and several offer free inspections and safety talks before harvest. Organizers encourage farms to schedule one.

Harness and an observer every single time. Teach your kids this young.

Our department does free bin talks. Call us before harvest, not during.
